If you don’t have these 7 things on your Substack, you’re doing it wrong
This is the reason behind your silence in substack
“I’m writing every week.”
“I’m showing up on Notes.”
“I even launched a product.”
But still, no momentum.
No real subscribers.
No sales.
No traction.
Here’s the real reason:
Your Substack isn’t built for growth or conversion.
Not yet.
It’s not your effort that’s off; it’s your foundation.
And these are the seven things you're likely missing.
1. No 'About' Page with your transformation story
Your About Page isn’t a resume. It’s a conversion tool.
Top creators like Shaan Puri and Anne-Laure Le Cunff use their About Page to:
Make readers feel something
Share the transformation they went through
Help readers see themselves in the journey
What you need to write:
Why you’re here
What changed for you
What this space will do for them
If your About Page doesn’t move someone or make them want to binge more, it’s costing you trust—and subscribers.
2. No welcome email = no early conversions
If your welcome email just says “Thanks for subscribing,” it’s a wasted opportunity.
This is your first chance to:
Introduce yourself with warmth and clarity
Offer a free gift (resource, toolkit, mini course, guide, anything simple)
Point readers to your best posts
Invite them to upgrade or check out your other work
Top creators use this email to build trust fast and make their first sale before ever publishing a new post.

There’s a moment in every creator’s journey when things finally click.
3. Your bio says nothing about the value for the reader
Your Substack bio shouldn’t be abstract or poetic. It should answer one thing:
What will I get by following you?
Clarity gets attention. Specificity builds trust.
Here’s a before-and-after:
Before:
“Writer. Dreamer. Learning in public.”
After:
“I help multi-passionate creatives turn scattered ideas into income—by turning their story into strategy.”
Your reader should feel immediately seen, supported, and curious.
4. No 'Best Of' post or bingeable library
People love curation. But most Substacks don’t guide the reader journey at all.
You need a featured post that rounds up your best work and points them where to go next.
Structure it like this:
Start Here (your origin story or biggest transformation post)
Most Helpful (3–5 value-rich essays or guides)
Reader Favourites (most opened or loved content)
What To Read Next (based on what they need help with)
Top creators pin this to the top of their page to make their archive bingeable from Day 1.
5. You’re not linking your past newsletters inside your new ones
Every post is a chance to deepen the relationship.
If someone liked what they read, give them somewhere to go next.
Most writers forget this—and it’s a missed opportunity to:
Keep people on your page longer
Increase post visibility and engagement
Sell your older offers passively
Start by adding 2–3 internal links to your past posts in every newsletter going forward.
6. No mention of your pricing, services, or offers
If your reader wants to work with you, how do they find that?
If your product is useful, how do they even know it exists?
Your paid Substack, Gumroad product, or mentorship should be:
Linked in your welcome email
Listed in your About Page
Softly mentioned at the end of every 2nd or 3rd post
Pinned inside a ‘Work With Me’ or ‘My Offers’ newsletter
If you’re not selling, people assume you have nothing worth buying.
7. Your newsletter name doesn’t stand out or say anything
If your newsletter is called “Thoughts on Life” or “My Weekly Letter,” it’s already forgotten.
You need a name that:
Reflects your theme or tone
Tells readers something about what they’ll feel or learn
It is easy to remember, search, and recommend
Test your title with this question:
Would I subscribe based on the name alone?
If not, rework it. Your name is your brand.
Now what? What to do right after reading this
If this post opened your eyes to what’s missing—don’t sit on it.
Here’s exactly what to do now:
Rewrite your Substack bio with a clear value promise
Set up a proper welcome email with links, a gift, and an upgrade CTA
Pin a curated “Best Of” post to your homepage
Link to older posts in every newsletter going forward
Add a clear offer, price, or product in your footer or featured post
Rethink your newsletter name if it feels vague or weak
Write your About Page with a transformation story—not just facts
